Chris's Great Grandfather

Henry's's father was Elias Rickman, his mother was Sarah Gates. He was born in 1835

Henry is our first link to the New Forest ancesters featuring in the the Rev. Henry Comyn's notebooks. Both Elias and Sarah being born in Sway in 1814.

I do not know much about Henry Rickman other than he must have moved to Portsmouth sometime in his youth and had a brother Lemual who remained in the New Forest.

We also know from Denton Curtis, descended from Lemual, that there were other siblings. Hive b 1836; Phoebe b 1837; Maria b 1838; John b 1840; Anne b 1844; Lemual b 1845. It seems that Sarah and Elias were very busy in the bedroom!

I believe it may have been John who fathered a Frederick who walked up North and founded the Buxton dynasty.

We know he married Mary Anne Bennet at the Parish Church Portsea on the 29th April 1873 when he was 38 years old (quite old for a first marriage) She was only 23 and must have been a fine catch.

He went on to father five children one of whom was Arthur, my Grandfather.

I have no idea what his profession was but Greengrocer rings some bells.

He died on the 8th April 1887 aged just 49.

Arthur would have been 5 years old when his father died

His death gave Mary Anne the opportunity to re marry which she did to Henry Brussels. ( pronounced brooselle )

Henry's five children were: Lilian May b 1875; William Ernest b 1877 d 1941; Henry Herbert b 1880 d aged 16 months; Arthur (my Grandad) b 1882 d 1963; Harry b 1885 d 1939;
